The Blackpool Arts Department last year had an 18 month Residency Program consisting of exhibitions, workshops and events funded by the Arts Council England and the National Lottery.

As part of this Residency Programme Helena Ben Zenou was awarded a grant of £4000.00 to produce work based on her research of The Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.

Helena has an international reputation and a strong history as an artist in residence being the Vickers Award Winner in 2005 and the Visiting artist for Illinois state University in America. She has recently returned from an Arts Council England Outward Mission to SW China, and has an up and coming exhibtion with Badept this year.

“The Blackpool Art Department Residency offers me a unique opportunity at this stage in my career - the chance to research and study aspects of Blackpool; to concentrate on building a new body of work in painting using this research; and the time, space and support to produce what I hope to be my most ambitious works yet.” Helena Ben-Zenou

“Blackpool is seen as the traditional vacation from the industrial heartlands, but the architecture of industry is still very present. The industrial wood and steel architecture of the classic rollercoaster’s, rides, pier and tower in Blackpool, sum up the spirit of the industrial age. The Modernist leisure structures of Blackpool epitomize the Modern world on a small scale, and offer a new way of considering the successes and failures of industrial Britain.” Helena Ben- Zenou
